Stopping the spending habits....

July 25th, 2007 at 01:53 pm

something that is hard to break!
I am going to plan out the weeks meals and try and not go over my $50 grocery budget for the week...we have a ton of meat in the freezer, I just need to be diligent and thaw it out! Spagetti is something that will last two nights as is chili....

I also am looking at our next few paychecks and setting up bills to pay so that the money won't be available to me! Our dryer seems to be broken so that will need replacing....another budget buster.

When I don't go to the store, I'm forced to use what I have in the house. Sometimes, I go there for one thing and end up buying something else for another day. Preplanning your menu's is a tremendous money saver and as making and freezing second portion meals. It helps out when you are having a busy day and can't prepare what you had planned. You sort of need plans and meals like that.

Another thing that really helps is cooking larger batches of things and freezing them in single portions. It sometimes takes a little longer, but it pays off over time. For example, I'll make a batch of vegetable pot stickers. It will take me a couple of hours, but I'll end up with about 60 pieces. I freeze them then any of us can pull out a few anytime we want a quick, cheap healthy meal. Or DW will make a lasagna and freeze it in single-size portions. I may take one to the office for lunch. Or we'll make a big batch of grilled veggies and brown rice. We'll have it for dinner one night and then one or both of us will use it for lunch a couple of days later.

It sounds like you have a great plan! Now you just have to follow it! (That is a weakness of mine!)

Check to see if the dryer can be repaired. Sometimes it is the simplest things! Or can you hang your laundry for a while and use the laundermat or dry at a friends house until you get the cash to pay for a dryer. Don't always assume you have to go out and buy new. Can a Craiglist used one do for you until you can buy a new one with cash? Can you buy a scratch and dent one? Just some thoughts!
